In Person + Livestreamed on EMPOWER Series YouTube and Facebook

If something happened tomorrow, would the people you love know what to do?

Where are your important documents? Who should be contacted? What accounts, insurance policies, property and other assets do you have? Are your beneficiary designations current? Who would make financial or health care decisions if you could not? What would happen to your digital accounts? And most importantly—have you clearly communicated your wishes to the people who may one day have to carry them out?

Estate planning is about more than preparing for death. It is about organizing your life, protecting the people you love and making your wishes easier to understand and carry out.

Join the EMPOWER Series and Attorney Shekinah Harris Henry of Harmony Legal Group for an interactive workshop designed to help you understand important estate-planning concepts and, just as importantly, begin taking action.

Shekinah is a licensed Texas attorney with nearly a decade of experience helping individuals, families and business owners protect what matters most. Her areas of focus include estate planning, probate, guardianship, business formation and contracts. Her approach centers on simplifying complex legal concepts so people can make informed decisions with confidence. Bio_Shekinah (1)

What We'll Explore

Whether you are just getting started or already have estate-planning documents, this workshop will help you think through and begin organizing important areas of your life, including:

  • Your personal and family information and the people who should be contacted in an emergency
  • Your assets, property, bank and investment accounts, retirement accounts and debts
  • Life insurance policies and beneficiary designations
  • Important documents and where they are located
  • The purpose of wills, trusts, powers of attorney and other estate-planning documents
  • Who you may want to make financial, legal or health care decisions if you cannot
  • Digital accounts, online information and digital assets
  • Personal property and items with sentimental value
  • Funeral, memorial and other final wishes
  • Professionals and trusted individuals your family may need to contact
  • How to organize this information so the appropriate people can find it when needed
  • What you have already completed, what may be missing and what your next steps should be

Estate-planning documents can include wills, trusts, powers of attorney and advance directives, while beneficiary designations, account ownership and digital assets can also affect what happens to property and information. AARP Policy Book

Estate Planning for Every Budget

You do not need to be wealthy to begin getting your affairs in order.

Some of the most important first steps involve organization rather than spending money: identifying what you own and owe, locating important documents, reviewing beneficiary information, documenting key contacts, thinking through your wishes and identifying questions that require professional advice.

The goal is not for everyone to leave with the same estate plan. Your circumstances are unique.

The goal is for you to leave more organized, better informed and with a clear list of actions to take next.

This Isn't Over When the Workshop Ends

At EMPOWER Series, we know what often happens after a great workshop.

You leave motivated. You intend to take action.

Then life happens.

That is why this workshop includes our Ideas in Action 90-Day Follow-Up.

Registered participants will be invited to three monthly group Zoom calls over the 90 days following the workshop. These sessions are designed to help you continue moving forward, ask general questions, report on your progress, identify roadblocks and commit to completing your next action before the following call.

Workshop → Action → Follow-Up → Accountability → Progress

Don't just learn about protecting your legacy.

Start doing it.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE THE WORKSHOP

I would make this a prominent section on the registration confirmation page/email because it establishes from the beginning that participants are expected to participate, not simply listen.

Come Prepared to Work on Your Own Plan

You do not need to bring original legal or financial documents, and please do not share sensitive account numbers, passwords, Social Security numbers or other confidential information during the workshop or group Zoom calls.

Before October 17, spend 20–30 minutes thinking about the following:

1. Identify your "people."
Who would need to know what to do if you became seriously ill, incapacitated or died? Think about family members, trusted friends, potential decision-makers and professionals.

2. Make a list of what you have.
You don't need balances or account numbers. Simply identify categories: home or other real estate, vehicles, checking/savings accounts, retirement accounts, investments, life insurance, business interests, valuable personal property and debts.

3. Identify the documents you already have.
For example: Will? Trust? Financial power of attorney? Medical documents? Life insurance policies? Property deeds? Beneficiary designations?

4. Think about where everything is located.
Would someone you trust know where to find your important documents and information if you could not tell them?

5. Think beyond money.
Consider family photographs, keepsakes, personal possessions, digital photographs, email and social-media accounts, subscriptions, online financial accounts and other parts of your digital life. Digital information and assets are increasingly important parts of planning. AARP

6. Bring your questions.
Write down the things about estate planning you have been putting off, don't understand or aren't sure how to begin.

Most importantly: don't stay home because you haven't done any of this.
If your answer to most of these questions is “I don't know” or “I haven't done that yet,” this workshop is for you.

THE 90-DAY CHALLENGE

I would actually give this a name in your marketing because it distinguishes EMPOWER Series from a typical estate-planning seminar.

Your Workshop Is the Beginning—Not the Finish Line

During the workshop, participants will begin identifying their priorities and create a personal action list.

Over the next 90 days, our three Ideas in Action Group Zoom Calls will encourage participants to move through three stages:

First 30 Days — ORGANIZE
Gather and organize your important information, documents, accounts, insurance information, beneficiaries, contacts and wishes. Identify what is missing.

Days 31–60 — DECIDE & CONNECT
Have important family conversations. Identify questions that require professional guidance. Make appointments with an attorney, financial professional, insurance professional, tax professional or other appropriate adviser when necessary.

Days 61–90 — COMPLETE & COMMUNICATE
Complete appropriate actions, organize finalized documents and information securely, make sure the appropriate trusted people know where information can be found, and establish a schedule for reviewing your plan as life changes.

This progression is consistent with the underlying estate-planning principles of organizing, communicating and updating rather than treating estate planning as a one-time event. AARP

EVENT Q&A

Who should attend?

Adults of all ages and financial circumstances—single, married, divorced or widowed; parents and nonparents; homeowners and renters; employees, retirees and business owners.

Do I need to have a lot of money or property?

No. Estate planning is not just about wealth. Everyone has personal information, relationships, possessions, wishes and decisions that may need to be addressed. The workshop will include actions people can begin taking at every budget level.

Is this only for people who don't have a will?

No. If you already have a will, trust or other documents, the workshop can help you think about whether your overall information is organized, whether beneficiary and contact information is current, whether trusted people know where documents are located, and whether changes in your life warrant a professional review.

Will I create a will or trust during the workshop?

No. The workshop will explain general concepts and help you organize information and identify next steps. It will not create individualized legal documents or provide individual legal advice.

Should I bring my financial statements or legal documents?

You may find it useful to review them privately before or after the workshop, but do not bring or share sensitive information unnecessarily. Never disclose passwords, Social Security numbers, full account numbers or other confidential personal information during the workshop or group Zoom sessions.

What if I cannot afford an attorney right now?

Come anyway. One purpose of the workshop is to help you understand what you can begin doing now to become more organized and what matters may require professional assistance. Being organized can also help make a future conversation with a professional more productive.

Will I be able to ask Attorney Shekinah Harris Henry questions?

There will be opportunities for general educational questions. Questions requiring an analysis of your personal circumstances or individualized legal advice should be addressed privately with an attorney of your choosing.

What are the three follow-up Zoom calls?

They are monthly group accountability and educational sessions during the 90 days following the workshop. Their purpose is to help participants continue taking action, discuss general questions and roadblocks, and commit to completing specific next steps.

Do I have to attend all three?

We strongly encourage it. The value of the 90-day process comes from taking action between calls and returning to report progress, identify obstacles and establish your next commitment.

Is the workshop available online?

Yes. Networking and refreshments begin at 10:00 AM Central, and the educational program begins at 10:30 AM Central, when it will be livestreamed on the EMPOWER Series YouTube and Facebook platforms.
